This is at a beauty salon near the jietai base in kengun. The shop renovated (in japanese, you say refo-mu suru) but because there was a swallow's nest, they built around it. I thought it was kind of sweet, what do you think?

What I want for Christmas
I go to a linguistics reading circle at Seinan Daigaku and the teacher there had this espresso maker. Cool! I really want one, but the cheapest version is 30,000 yen! Ouch! However, if you want to buy me one for Christmas, please do!

omiyage suggestions 2
This is a kimono store in Kengun near my house. It's very close to Kuwamizu densha stop and just past the Baskin Robbins 31 on Higashi Bypass. While I don't recommend buying a kimono for your host family (too expensive!) there are a lot of cheaper things that are very Japanese and very interesting. For example, this shop has small bags for women with kimonos that are very pretty and they have also had paper umbrellas for about 1000 yen. There are several kimono stores around town, so go in and see what they have!

This always bothers me. Every bookstore that has "book" sounds like the store only has one book! Why would anyone go to a bookstore that only has one book?
how to eat sanma, baby!
I went to Fukuoka on Saturday for a linguistics reading circle at Seinan daigaku and stopped at my favorite restaurant, Masafuku （正福） which has great great great fish and their special of the day was my favorite, sanma. As you can see, I love sanma, even the naizo (which I save for last) Masafuku is in the Tenjin Core building. There two, one on the 7th floor and another in the B2 floor. Though both are good, the B2 floor is small and cozy. Check it out!

Good English?
Here is a good example of English that is grammatically correct, but in the wrong place. This is a bill changer at the gas station I use, so you can put in a 5000 yen or 10000 yen bill and get back 1000 yen bills. Here's what the machine says:
Though the English is grammatical, this sort of paragraph would be fine on a gambling machine, but when I put in a 5000 yen bill to get 5 1000 yen bills, I do not want to be gambling!

I think that it would be useful and easy for me to find examples if I photo blog about all of the misspellings and mistakes I see. As English students, you should enjoy these mistakes as well!

Kim-chi, healthy or dangerous
When I was a graduate student at the University of Oregon, I taught a number of Korean students and I first learned how much Koreans love kimchi. Here at Gakuen, the exchange students are amazed that the Korean exchange students have a special refridgerator at the international dormitory just for kimchi that is sent from home. This article article talks a little bit about how much Koreans love their special food.

A little disturbing
I went to school early this morning (around 8), and they must have sprayed this tree with pesticide because there were caterpillars dropping on the ground. It was obvious that the tree needed it, because there were about 100 caterpillars and you could hear them dropping plop plop plop, one or two every second. I'm don't like caterpillars very much, but when they landed on the ground, they would roll over and over, like they were in pain, so I couldn't help but feel a little sorry for them.

Kuro buta baby!
Saturday night was Kurobuta shabu shabu night. Wow! Though I ma curious why Kagoshima's famous foods are not from the sea. Someone told me that katsuo was a Kagoshima speciality, but even that isn't really something like an umi no mono. Anyone from Kagoshima know why?

We stopped at the rest stop at Sakurajima rest stop and 'foot spa' looked very inviting, but I forgot to bring a towel. :^( So if you are going to Kagoshima, don't forget to take a small towel!
